The Fire of Pentecost

The Fire of Pentecost

And when the days of Pentecost were drawing to a close, they were all together in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a violent wind coming, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. And there appeared to them parted tongues as of fire, which settled upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in foreign tongues, even as the Holy Spirit prompted them to speak (Acts 2, 1-4).

Pentecost—the infilling of the apostles with the Holy Spirit—the birthday of the church… a day of hope. Christ has bodily ascended into heaven, but His Spirit now resides in each of us just as it did in the disciples. Although many of us still faced Easter worship this year in masks, socially distanced, or on ZOOM; Pentecost finds us full of hope. We are ready to rejoin our church and social communities face to face. We can go forth without fear to share our gratitude for the progress in healing from this pandemic and the blessing of the vaccine. Filled with hope, reminded on this Pentecost Sunday that Christ dwells within us, we can go forth to share the healing, empowering love of God with others.

In Christ,
Nancy Young, National President The Episcopal Community, Pentecost 2021
