Advent: A time to prepare

Greetings from The Rt. Rev. Philip Duncan

We are about to enter the Advent Season: a time to prepare for the celebration when we will remember God coming into His creation as one of us. Advent is a time of getting ready for the birth of Christ Jesus our Lord. For many of us, it is the time of card and letter writing to friends far and near. For others, this time is for spiritual preparation; for others, it is gift buying to then be given on Christmas; and for still others, it is a time of pain as we remember what once was and will never/cannot ever be again. And for some of us, it is a time to remember those who have gone before us in faith and hope. It is a time to prepare for what is still to come, what is before all of us.

Advent opens wide the door of our faith as we also recognize the fullness of our humanity: birth, life and death. Advent is also about what is to come and the joy preparing for the birth of Jesus, born of Blessed Mary—Jesus who died for us so that we might have life eternal.

The older I get, I like Advent more and more. A member of my first parish who was just a little older than I am now, said to me, “Fr. Duncan, Advent is about God saying to us: ‘Here I come ready or not!’” I know she was correct. For her wisdom and the wisdom (and love) of so many who have gone before us all during this Advent, we give thanks to God for His grace and blessings shared through those saints who have graced our lives.
